Looking for a therapist in Boulder?

You’ve found one who wants to hear your story and build a kind, trustworthy working relationship with you. Together, we use research-backed methods that are proven to help you grow towards your goals. Most insurances as well as private-pay (including services without a psychological diagnosis) with income-based sliding scale options are available.

Because of my previous career background and life experiences, people in high-stress, high-performance occupations often seek counseling with me. Business leaders and entrepreneurs, medical doctors and healthcare professionals, first responders, pilots, and veterans frequently ask me to help them work through disruptive issues in life without jeopardizing their careers. That being said, I’ve chosen my training and guided my practice to be able to work with just about anyone who is seeking therapy.

Maybe you’re working on communication or trust in a relationship. Or you might be managing big emotions with disruptive behavior in a family. Perhaps you want to work through your own trauma, anxiety, depression or other issues. We can address all of that and more.

And there is hope. As hard as today feels, there is hope because your life can improve. Life can feel happier. Each day can feel more fulfilling and purposeful. Relationships can feel easier and less volatile.

You are not alone in this struggle, so long as you take the first step and reach out. My name is Matthew, and I will respond to you.

Individual

Meet one-on-one with your therapist

We will work together on the issues, skills, patterns in your life, psychological diagnoses, or other topics that are holding you back from your goals. Get therapy that works based on decades of research and positive outcomes for previous clients.

Relationships

Couples | Marriage | Pre-Marriage | Non-Traditional | Separation | Divorce

All relationships are welcome. People often come to strengthen their relationship, work through a specific issue, or grow skills. Some people come for help deciding whether to stay together or separate. Still others choose therapy for help navigating life as they separate or divorce.

Families

Whole-Household | Multi-Generational | Children at Home | Adult Family

Every family is unique, and working together in counseling is one of the most powerful ways of achieving positive change. Attend with parents and children together — even include extended family and “found family” —  to experience the lifelong impact of systems-based therapy. Your family is never too young or old to start.

Parenting

Alternating attendance with parents and children

Using Attachment Theory and other research-backed approaches, optionally including Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), we strengthen the parent-child bond and grow parenting skills to help kiddos develop in healthy, successful ways.

Children

Child-Therapist Focused Sessions

Children face a world that is constantly new to them, and often feel as though they are the first ones to ever experience anything like what they are going through. Individual sessions are available for ages 12 and older. For under 12, we’ll work on a customized approach to therapy that will typically involve the parent or caregiver in at least some sessions or parts of sessions.

Groups

Meet & grow with others in similar situations.

Though currently one of the least popular ways to receive counseling, it remains consistently one of the most effective at achieving long-term change. And, it is usually the most affordable approach. Joining a group with a skilled counselor feels less intimidating. Current groups: Circle of Security Parenting (COSP); Men’s Dating Skills.

OK, it's time -- take the first step.

Matthew Clausen - Mental Health Therapist in Boulder, CO

So who would be my therapist? Meet Matthew.

I am Matthew Clausen (MA, MFTC, LPCC), a mental health therapist who serves people in the Colorado front range through in-person and telehealth counseling sessions. Before I received a masters degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at Gonzaga University, I spent 16 years in a business career. My empathy for the real-world struggles and compromises people face has grown from my own experiences in high-pressure business settings, management and leadership roles, as well entrepreneurial and start-up adventures along the way.

I grew up on a family farm where having enough money was always a struggle and the work was never done. I was lucky to go to college, where I set a goal for myself to work two careers: in the first, I would earn enough to feel financially stable, then transition to a second career to be of service in a way that leaves the world (hopefully) a better place.

When we work together, you’ll find that I believe you deserve love and understanding. And I will strive to show it to you each time we meet.

My office is on Broadway in southern Boulder. We can also meet through telehealth. Let’s start with a free 10-15 minute call, so you can get a feel for what it would be like to work together. You can call, text, or pick a time that works well for you right now by clicking the button below.
